Driving licence
Today , 53 years ago , I passed my driving test in Wigan. I had 3 lessons for my 17th birthday as a present (£ 1 per lesson With BSM ) , I took my test in a red Austin 1100. I was so confidant of not passing , that I had booked a further lesson , and this time I paid for it myself , a further lesson , straight after the test . So after passing I drove to Gullic-Dobsons , in Ince , where we were building the new office block , and the instructor dropped me off . My first car was a Hillman Huskey 195?. I have had 1 speeding offence , no points , no fine just attend a 1 day course . 3 parking tickets , and I average 19,000 miles a year . ( To go to the nearest big town , Hereford , it's 80 miles round trip .) Happy days .

I wuzz thinkin' , Obtaining , and keeping my driving licence is the best bit of kit I have ever had . Without it I most probably could not work as I have done, it has given , not just me , but my family freedom , I am independent .( If you don't include , a mechanic , breakdown service Esso/Texico etc; ,tyre manufacturers , and tarmacer' s .

Re: Driving licence
I bought a nearly new car in 2004 and the dealership in Wigan would not sell me spare parts without a photo licence an argument followed before they changed their minds

Re: Driving licence
I learned to drive in an Austin 1100.
My instructor was a one man concern from Hindley.
I would’ve been 20 years old in the Summer of 1967.
I had 10 lessons and passed my test first time.
I didn’t get a car until I was married, it would have been January 1970, so I was well out of practice.
I remember not being very confident driving at first, but soon got to refresh my skills.

Re: Driving licence
Unless you get a driving conviction or change address or change licence category there is no need to apply for a photo card licence.
Just another way to make money out of people, in my opinion.

Re: Driving licence
Every five years I have to re take a test to be able to drive a MEWP
What make them think I have forgot how to drive one?
Another money making scheme methinks.

Re: Driving licence
Workers at the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are set to vote on more strike action in the coming weeks, threatening to worsen the huge 56,000 backlog of HGV licence applications.
Members of the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) who work at the DVLA offices in Swansea, south Wales, will vote on whether to continue with industrial action, which originally began in February over Covid-related safety concerns.
It comes as Britain is in desperate need of more truck drivers to help tackle the supply chain crisis as it threatens to wreak havoc in the run up to Christmas.

Re: Driving licence
I applied to renew mine online recently and it took less than a week and cost £14.00.
As it was a renewal they used my current passport photo which they are able to check online.
According to press reports a lot of the delays are due to paper applications.
