WIGAN Council will use cutting edge technology this winter to try and cut down on unnecessary gritting of roads and car parks, writes Local Democracy Reporter Niall Griffiths.
Staff could soon rely on sensors producing real-time temperature of road surfaces, instead of relying on official weather forecasts.
The lightweight devices can be attached to most roadside equipment providing real-time road-surface temperature data.
Accurate readings would prevent unnecessary trips to areas that do not need gritting, saving fuel and salt supplies.
