Re: George Formby
My dad, born 1902, took my little brother and I along Wathie house lane...Walthew House lane near the present Heinz factory, on the weekends and we would call in at Georges House on the red brick road to Martland Mill. The people now/then resident in the house sold chocolates and sweets. I always remember my father telling us that George Formby used to live in this house. Didn't mean a thing to us little kids, but it is so important to know, now, that I was in George Formby's house.
Re: George Formby
I have been having a snoop at the history of George Formby (George Hoy Booth) to see if I could answer Maureen's Question. I havent answered that yet, but I saw the 1911 Census.... George is there with his widowed grandmother, Louisa Hoy, one of his many Sisters and Visitors. Missing are his Father George Formby sr (James Lawler Booth) and his Mother Eliza Ann Hoy. The address on the Census is.. Walthew House Farm, Pemberton. and although the Head of the household is Louisa Hoy, The cover of the Census gives the Address and the name James Booth. Presumably He owned the property.
Another interesting titbit is that Louisa's Husband, Georges Grandfather was George Hoy, A Groom from Newmarket, Norfolk. Young George started his working life, not as a Comedian but as a Trainee Jockey.

jo anne..I have no idea where that can be,Great George Street was a very long Street,I wonder if it's at the bottom end..Ill keep my eyes open next time we go down there.
Weatherwax..if it's any help,a Mr Priestly was supposed to be Georges Uncle, they lived at the very top of the Street,in fact right facing my Grandparents..we lived just a bit further down.

James Booth was George Formby senior

Walthew House and Whalley House were two separate farms. Whalley House farm was occupied in 1871 by the Dickinson family with the Ormeshers as live in workers. By 1881 Edward Ormesher and his wife Ellen had taken over the farm. They were still there in 1911 but by then James Topping born 1869 who was my great grand uncle had married Mary, the boss's daughter. They had 3 children, James, Ann and Maria (who later died). Marion (who also died) was born in 1912. Edward, or Ned as I remember him, was born on Christmas Day 1913.
Walthew House Farm was occupied by the Dawson family in 1881. In 1891 and 1901 The King family, headed by Ann, were in occupation.
By 1911 it was owned by James Booth, better known as George Formby senior.

Thanks, Oy and Maureen
The tower is behind the units and close by, but in front of, the railway line.

Re: George Formby
Well! I think I have found the answer for Maureen. Any Uncle must be either a Brother or Brother in Law to Georges Mother or Father. His Father had only Half siblings, none of whom came to or lived in Lancashire, so that discounts the fathers side. His Mother had a few siblings, Georgina, John William, and Matilda. Her Sister, Georgina married in Wigan to James Alfred PRIESTLEY. He would have been Georges Uncle by Marriage. He was a Groom and Coachman for Middleton and Woods, but He died in 1908 and always seems to have lived in Marsh Lane, not George Street. He did have at least Two Sons who would have carried the name Priestley, But they would have been Georges Cousins. It is possible that it was one of these that lived in George Street.

Hello Weatherwax..you have been busy haven't you..for the life of me I can't remember Mr Priestlys Christian name..he lived as I say directly facing my Grandparents..his wife used to be a wet nurse ..and his Sons were Jacky and Albert..when they demolished our Street Mr Priestly finished up in Norley Hall..I met him once in his later years, and I remember him asking me if I'd cut his hair for him..so I think a bit of dementia had set in...anyway thank you for your hard work.x

Re: George Formby
Glad you found it interesting. I love problems and questions like that, as long as I have the basic clues to work with (I am not a magician ) And you gave me the breakthrough when you mentioned the name Priestley. I knew it wasn't on his fathers side, and his mothers side was Hoy, So it had to be one of her sisters with a change to a married name.
Talking about names, The other Sister married a Eugene Louis Fawcett (A Butcher)
