Theodore Major (1908-1999) was a Wigan born artist.
In 1994, five years before he died, Theodore wrote ‘I am still busy painting - it’s my only escape from all the cruelty in the world, but I must express it all in paint’.
With incredible energy he produced around 300 extraordinary works, his ‘Monster’ paintings, into which he poured all the pain, anger, humour, frustration and love that had nourished a lifetime’s dedication to his art.
Michael Howard is a writer and lecturer. He has written numerous books, including 'L.S. Lowry, A Visionary Artist' and 'Ghislaine Howard, the Human Touch'. He is currently working on a major publication dedicated to Theo, 'Walking on Fire'.

In this room you can witness Wigan’s own master painter, Theodore Major, experience his vision of life as one “of endless crucifixions”, the symbolism of the crucifixion a constant expression of the World’s violent madness.

Just watched it Jo Anne, not a particularly interesting painting, two shadowy figures dressed in black.
The painting was valued ay £3000 to £3500, apparently demand for his paintings have increased steadily over the last 20 years since his death in 1999.

Re: Theodore Major
Me neither Ray..but afraid niceness doesn't get you far these days in art...what gets me is people with more money than sense buy expensive works of art not to put it on their wall and love it,it gets wrapped up stacked away in a basement for eg..just to make more money on it.

Re: Theodore Major
Money and art have always gone hand in hand Mo.
Art should be appreciated for what it is, not for what it is worth.

Mo, you are right, as you say “wrapped up stacked away in a basement”.
I like most art but not modern art or impressionism and definitely not the cubism of Picasso.

Re: Theodore Major
I quite liked the painting, but Major has captured my imagination anyway,
and I really enjoyed the discussion about him between owner & expert.
Antiques Roadshow - Series 41, MediaCityUK 2 - iPlayer (From 38:50)
£3k - £5k
