The original gate posts to the hall are still on Beech Hill lane..they led straight to the hall.

Re: Beech Hill Hall c1880
There’s an interesting family link to Wigan Parish Church - Wiki:
Francis Henry Thicknesse (née Coldwell; 1829 – 1921) was the inaugural Bishop suffragan of Leicester from 1888 until 1903.
He was born Francis Henry Coldwell, but changed his name by royal licence to Thicknesse when he married Ann Thicknesse, daughter and sole heir of Ralph Anthony Thicknesse (MP for Wigan), 1855. Anne was the last of the Thicknesses to be born in Beech Hill … There is a memorial to Francis in Wigan Parish Church.

I wouldn't care but I used to walk through there taking my lad when he was little to School,he always walked along the wall as you approach from Wallgate.

£50 fine..that was an awful lot of money in those days wasn't it..I would have been fined I should think for letting my lad walk on the little wall...but folk were kept more in check then weren't they.

Re: Beech Hill Hall c1880
What a fascinating history, we have. Thank you ladies for uncovering it....
Re: Beech Hill Hall c1880
Lolls,I've only just read the history of Beech Hill,Cliff would have loved reading that,he was born and raised in Beech Hill Lane..I now live very near the 'White farm house' as it's known as and a friend of ours told us about an old man that had all the old photographs..one of his teachers was the first man in Wigan to have a camera ,he left the old man his album of photos and gave me his address to go and visit.
I did of course,a lovely old man invited me in to show me an album, what an album..it even had a photo of the front of our house as it was then,a dirt track with a scythe on the ground.
Next door but one to us was the little School for the six children of Beech Hall..as I said Cliff would have loved reading the history, such a pity.
