Re: GM Mayor and local Elections 2024
Over the years it has always seemed fashionable to call Andy Burnham on the various Wigan forums, from when he was MP for Leigh, although I have never called him, and he started the Hillsborough Inquiry off, and when that reported it was dynamite, it exploded.
I like the thing about taking back control of the buses, and creating the Bee network.
As regards the Greater Manchester CAZ that was too radical, if that had been implemented it would have hurt a lot of people including me, I am all in favour CAZ's but bring them in gradually.
On that list of candidates, there are two 'independents' and normally you have 'crackpots' who stand has independent candidates, and normally that is where I go to vote, but of those two, one is bad un and the other looks like he is a wannabee lunatic, not the real McCoy, and certainly not a crisp, I have him down has a weirdo, and I am not voting for a weirdo, although I could be accused of being a racist, and I got my postal vote thing today, so what would a Tory Mayor do for Greater Manchester ?
I suppose it is possible that the Reform candidate may poll more votes than the Conservative candidate, but hypothetically, would a Reform Mayor, reform Greater Manchester ?
Would he bloody hell as like.
Decisions decision eh ....

Re: GM Mayor and local Elections 2024
Do these City Mayors actually improve anything ?
Because we have to pay extra for these City Mayors, and on top of that Andy Burnham wanted to charge folk £10 a day to use their vehicles in Greater Manchester, if they couldn't afford to buy a new or newish vehicle, which is like punishing poor folk for being poor, it reminds me of Feudal times, when the Landed Gentry exploited their position by having Serfs to do their bidding, because they were tied to the land, and it was a form of slavery

Re: GM Mayor and local Elections 2024
In my view, this election is fascinating to say the least!
I may be wrong, but the only candidate with nothing to lose is Andy Burnham. If he wins, he wins. If he loses, then its a safe bet that he will be put up as a candidate in the upcoming General Election. Thars despite him having said a number of times that he does not want to return to Westminster.
A question arises from that. Is it best to have our Andy as the returning Mayor, or entering Westminster again? Opinions?

In my opinion, A Burnham would make a better leader of the Labour party than Starmer

I agree, I think he would make a better leader, and he has Minsterial experience, and although he once said that he would never stand for parliament again, he has since said that he might do, depending on the circumstances.

Re: GM Mayor and local Elections 2024
I was joking TTs. But I do remember him putting himself forward for GM Mayor quite
a few years ago when he lived in Salford. Needless to say he wasn't successful, he then moved to Wigan. He had a bust up a couple of years later with PF [yes him] Somewhere along the line he ran as Green Candidate in Preston He also ran for as an Independent in Ashton. Haven't heard much from him for a few years. Has he retired.

Got you now, and he was an nasty un, and was it about 20yrs ago, the independents got together and formed a new Party, the Community Action Party (CAG) or something like that, and they managed to get a few councillors elected, and then they imploded, they ripped themselves apart.

Re: GM Mayor and local Elections 2024
Labour has taken Blackpool South from the Conservatives in a by-election as Sir Keir Starmer's party makes gains in polls across England.
Sir Keir said the Blackpool result - a massive 26% swing to Labour - sent "a direct message" to Rishi Sunak from voters that "we want change".
The Tories were expected to have a bad night at local council elections and so far have lost around half the seats they were defending.
Many results are still to come.
