I have a vague memory of a strange accident that was connected to Maypole pit. Somewhere around the end of WW2, a train that was shunting coal between Maypole and Mains oit at Bryngates disappeared into a hole that suddenly appeared , taking its driver with it. The hole was sealed, so it and the drivers remains are still there.
