Well-known Wigan-born figures include entertainers George Formby, Roy Kinnear, Ted Ray and Frank Randle; miners' leader Joe Gormley; and former Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Sir James Anderton. Actor Sir Ian McKellen grew up in the town in a house opposite Mesnes Park.

When I look up the Wiend and you can see how the Roman settlement. called Coccium that was the perfect place to see all around before there were any buildings. They would be able to see all around and they have found Roman remains in there. I love looking up there when I am passing.
