Armistice Day 11 Nov 2020
Preparations have been made for Wigan Borough to mark Remembrance Sunday in a different way this year.
The council usually arranges 14 events but a new format is required in light of the global pandemic and to ensure public health guidelines are adhered to.
It means officers will focus on supporting services at the parish churches in Wigan and Leigh where restrictions on the number of attendees will be in place.
To avoid large gatherings, no parades or outside services are being organised.

For Wigan Borough it will all change again shortly bearing in mind the lockdown starting on Thursday.
I can't say how exactly as I haven't had the final info yet.

I'm pretty sure something will be live streamed from Wigan Parish Church. Leigh too I think.

The combined bands of the Coldstream and Welsh Guards perform songs and hymns associated with the Great War, introduced with a reading of John McCrea's war poem In Flanders Fields by Shakespearian actor Henry Ainley. The tunes range from the solemn Abide with Me to cheerful marching songs like Tipperary and Pack up your Troubles, concluding with the national anthem.

Three very interesting and poignant stories from Jim Meehan, commemorating Remembrance Day.

Re: Armistice Day 11 Nov 2020
A true story connected to Armistice Day.
A short while before World War 1 broke out, three brothers from the Wigan area joined the Army. The reason was simple. They did it simply to be able to eat.
Brother Number 1 survived the War, and went on to raise a family, For the rest of his life, he remained in the Wigan area.
Brother Number 2 also survived, and emigrated to New Zealand. I've been told that all people living there with his surname are his descendants.
Brother Number 3 died on November 11th after stepping on a land mine. Therefore being one of the last casualties of the War. Even so, as far as I am aware, his name does not appear on any War Memorial.
