Could make sense, Lolly. It’s just such an unusual name.

Re: Brocol House
I have a theory... does anyone know the name of the pub that stood where Brocol House is now? I know the Derbyshire Arms was across the road... but there was another pub where Brocol House is. If it was called The Grapes, that is your answer.

Re: Brocol House
Searching online, I haven’t found the relevant info, but there are quite a lot of negative comments about the building.
And I’m intrigued by what Stuart Maconie’s description might be …
I’ve reserved The Pie At Night for the end of March: BorrowBox

It was Brewers Arms, Cadfael: WW Thread (2012)
From WW Album - Brewers Arms was the white building shown

We were both studying the same WW thread, Lolly.
Cadfael, had it been The Grapes how would that explain Brocol House?

Oh Well, so much for that idea. Brocol is another name for the Par Grape, a wine grape

Thanks, Cadfael, I’d not found any definition for Brocol. Your idea could still be a possibility?

How did Brocol House in Wigan get its name

That’s an interesting question. Brocol House is a building on King Street in Wigan, where the Jobcentre Plus and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) are located12. According to some sources, Brocol House was named after a pub that used to stand on the same site, called the Brewers Arms34. The pub was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the new building, which was initially occupied by the Inland Revenue. The name Brocol is derived from the first two letters of each word in Brewers Arms, and was chosen as a tribute to the former establishment. However, this is not a verified fact, and there may be other explanations for the origin of the name. I hope this helps you.
