Orrell Mount.
Thought this might be of interest . . .
An advert from an old Liverpool newspaper I have - Gore's General Advertiser, 1st August 1816.
The Orrell Mount Estate is now the Mount pub/restaurant. This estate, and the other properties mentioned, belonged to colliery owner John Clarke, who was having financial difficulties at the time.

Re: Orrell Mount.
Apparently reading this it looks like it's the pit owner that built it
"The gentleman from the Nunnery would possibly have been Colonel Clarke - I believe he was possibly connected to the family that owned a lot of the mines in the area - in fact the Mount was built by one of the mine owners, as was Atherton House on the opposite side of the road past Orrell Post and facing the farm, and the large white house at the traffic lights at orrel Post - oh, and Orrell Hall too !"

Re: Orrell Mount.
Lolly - I believe John Clarke was responsible for building The Mount. He is buried in UpHolland parish churchyard in the big unsightly tomb about 50 feet to the north of the vestry.
I knew Colonel Clark (no 'e') well. Both Nordic (RIP) and myself used to call in and see him at his home, The Nunnery. He died about 30 years ago, well into his nineties.
A couple of years ago I had some communication with a relation of the Colonel, who told me there was no connection between their family and the Clarke mine owners.
The Nunnery was built for an order of Benedictine nuns, who fled from their convent in Montargis in France, during the French Revolution.

Re: Orrell Mount.
Thanks Mickrick. It's a pity that the link to a book on my post in the thread Pemberton is no longer valid. Damned if I can remember the name of the book.

Possibly, I remember reading part of the book as a free to read book.
