Not an accent, a languge! A true story to illustrate the fact.

Back in 2010, we were sailing a Narrowboat on the Llangollen Canal together with some friends from Sweden. Un their honour, we had a Swedish flag hoisted on the stern. In a lock queue we got talking to a couple of elderly ladies. When they heard me speak, they asked where I was from, and of course, I said Wigan. I asked where they were from, and they said Oldham. After that, the conversation changed to dialect. Leaving the lock, one of our Swedish friends asked me "Which language where you speaking in to th ladies?"

A Wigan friend of mine while visiting the US, the Americans thought he was a German trying to speak English.
