It is enough to make a Scotsman splutter into his evening dram – an English whisky has been named the Best Single Malt in the world.
The English Sherry Cask whisky, made in a Norfolk distillery, beat stiff international competition, including Scotland’s finest, in the World Whisky Awards.
Bottled by hand by The English Distillery in Breckland, it is an unpeated single malt that has been matured in the finest Pedro Ximenez (PX) sherry casks.
The distillery opened its doors 17 years ago but its award winning whisky, priced at £59 a bottle, has been available for only six months.
The judges praised its ‘aromas of rich dark fruits from the sherry-filled casks’.

Re: Oy Fred
Really surprising, that a distiller with such a short brewing experience could produce a drink that was considered better than other whisky producers with all those decades of knowledge.
Is it just down to the sherry casks?
Anyroad it’s not the sort of whisky that you would drown with a bottle of dry ginger is it?
I think we should all club in to get Fred a bottle for Christmas

Re: Oy Fred
I've tried a few English and Welsh whiskies and am yet to sip one I'd sip again.
"Best Single Malt in the world" - the world is a big place! Did they judge them all?
"World Whisky Awards" - there are many of these too. This one is from "World Whisky Magazine" so really it should be called "World Whisky MAGAZINE Awards"
I await my fave whisky guru's opinion

Don't ask me I've no idea. I did try a 12 year old malt whisky that I remember being very nice, I just cant remember the name of it.It may have been Isle of Jura, but cant say positively that it was.
