Illustrious Pair to be Honoured with 2023 Blue Plaques
Wigan Council News (20th Dec ‘22)
I love how the opportunity isn’t missed to big up the Council as well as the plaque recipients.
The remarkable achievements of a wartime heroine and the career of a renowned architect will be recognised as part of a flagship Wigan Council cultural scheme.
Mary O’Shaughnessy (b. Ashton-in-Makerfield), saved the lives of RAF officers trapped in occupied France during WWII, and James Caldwell Prestwich (b. Atherton) designed many of the borough’s civic buildings.

A Blue Plaque has been awarded to Mary O’Shaughnessy who hid stranded servicemen and returned injured airmen to the UK during WWII
Born in Ashton-in-Makerfield, she moved to France after the 1921 Census and remained there when the Nazis occupied France

You might notice a new blue plaque at Leigh Town Hall to commemorate the life of James C. Prestwich, who was Leigh's premier architect, designing many local buildings.
(Pictured: Heather Lawler, who nominated the plaque & Councillor Anderson, Mayor of the Wigan Borough)

Re: Blue Plaques
A Blue Plaque has been unveiled to honour the life of a Wigan-born composer who spent his early years singing at Wigan Parish Church and later years composing music for Royals.
Sir Ernest Bullock began his musical career as a chorister at Wigan Parish Church under director of music, Sir Edward Bairstow.
Continuing his musical education with Bairstow, Sir Ernest went on to become a prominent figure in the musical world.
He became assistant organist at Manchester Cathedral, then Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral before moving to Westminster Abbey as Director of Music.
