That tree in the middle on the slope always
had a rope attached to the main branch , so

Yes, I remember the rope. There was always some kids who could get their hands on good strong ropes and could shin up trees in these woods and also the Long Wall at Winstanley.

An story for you, gassey...

I was brought up in Wigan and of course we did all these things.

In my late 20's...early 30's, I had a butchers shop in Fleetwood. I had a couple of youngsters working for me and on a Wednesday afternoon I would travel down to Wigan with an order which I got from the Vale Royal and also to visit my parents in Norley. My kids were very young so after the delivery I took these young lads on a walk through my old stomping ground of Dean Wood. Aged 13-14 years and grown up in Fleetwood, so never experienced what we did.

Anyway, we walked through Dean Wood and came upon the motorway viaduct and THERE....was hanging..... A ROPE...from the girders. We were on a steep hill of course, leading down to the river.

Well, these lads had never seen anything like this before. So, I said , go ahead and grab the rope and swing out over the valley and back to the hill.

They emphatically said..NO WAY, Fred...

So, being in my second childhood, I grabbed the rope and swung out across the valley and returned safely to the hill.....They were amazed that an old man had done this.

Needless to say, I couldn't even keep them off it from then on... They loved it..something, sadly they had never experienced.

So there is a good point in all our activities, growing up in Wigan.
