Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company Boundary Stones

These boundary stones can be found along the old Lancaster Canal section. They mark out the land owned by the Leeds Liverpool Canal Company. They are placed where paths join the towpath. They can be found on the mainline but they are most common here.

OK. Well, the stones do, obviously, show the presence of the Leeds Liverpool Canal Company. However, they do not show any boundary of land 'owned' by the Leeds Liverpool Canal Company.
Why? Because the Leeds Liverpool Canal Company didn't 'own' any land there. They firstly leased the tolls, then they leased the canal section, in perpituity, from the Lancaster Canal Company. Tha' sees!

Correct, the real reason for the stones is for the horse puller to sit on to give the horse a carrot

It's hard to understand the actual need for any stone, or any form of notice, relating to the Leeds Liverpool Canal Company for that matter.
There's only one canal in the area. It's not as if any barge-owner would get mixed up as per who's canal he was actually on.

It's just bravado. Like Wigan Council having the Wigan Council crest printed on every street-sign. It reminds me of a young scally who paints his name all over walls, or another who might write M.U.F.C. or Wigan RLFC on the seats of a bus.

It's pathetic.
