The lion seems to have originally stood on the parapet of Wigan Gas Works.

The Stone Lion, Haigh Hall
A leaflet provided at the park (LinkExternal link Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust) states that “The stone lion was once part of a bridge on the estate of Atherton Hall in Leigh. The bridge collapsed in the early 1900s.”. It has also been suggested that it may have once stood on the parapet of Wigan Gasworks (LinkExternal link Public Sculpture of Greater Manchester by Terry Wyke, Harry Cocks (via Google Books) ).
