There used to be a picture house behind the shops that I am sure was called the Palace. you went up the Wiend or some other alley near there to get to it.

Yep... yep. It was the Empire, not Palace. But there was a Palace Picture House on King Street, where Revolution is now.

I don't think it was ever built, if it was I've never heard of it or any other theatre by Palatine's in Station Road.

Re: People palace theatre
The Palace Picture house in King Street I remember as a grander building than Cadfael's picture. It was where Brocol House was built and my mother would frequent it with family and neighbours from Kay's houses in the early thirties.
I remember her saying how they always saved the aisle seat for big Henry Duddle. Not Station Road but a probable rebuild of the one in Cadfael's picture,it did have a large arched doorway with pillars.
There is a grainy newspaper clipping on WW Item #: 27010

Re: People palace theatre
Is this the building myg? The arch to the left? I always took that to be The Hypodrome Theatre, but I will stand to be corrected.

The Palace Picture Theatre was taken over by Magee-Marshall & Company around 1940. In 1950 a British Acoustic(BA) sound system was installed. CinemaScope was installed in 1956, but the cinema closed in the late-1950’s.
And from Wigan TownTrail
Right of the Town Hall in the distance the gas works area was the site of a Roman burial ground. Turning to face the opposite side of King Street this area has changed radically since 1945. The large 1960’s office block to the left was the site of Wigan Brewery – Wigan’s first commercial brewery, built in 1780 by the Robinson family. By the 1890’s the Brewery owned over 80 public houses in Wigan but was sold in 1893 when the owner was certified a lunatic. Later the Palace Cinema occupied the site. Opposite Rodney Street the low, flat roofed building offers a poor terminal feature.
From The pleasure palce by Brian Murphy The large arch shown on Cadfael's photo was the entrance to the pit stalls. The grand opening of thePalace Picture Theatre was on Wednesday December 13th 1911.Prices Pit 2d and Stalls 4d.
The hall was previously known as The King Street Rink.
