Foraging Empty Foraging

Post by Lolly Sun 01 Sep 2019, 9:34 am

Does anyone forage? I'm always finding mushrooms, but not had the courage to eat many unless I def know what they are. I found some chicken of the woods last year, but wasnt too sure about the tree  it was growing on.  The yew tree is poisonous so therefore the mushroom is poisonous. I know you can eat dandelion ,nettles, and a few garden plants.  Hawthorn berry  is on my list of to try.

"Horse chestnuts are carried for good luck and charm. The British schoolchildren tie them to their shoelaces and play with them by smashing it hard on the floor."

I used to collect mushrooms with my Grandmother, travelling through there a couple of years ago, and ended up collecting them again, and showing both my Daughters how to do it. They were meadow mushrooms though. We had been watching the local Postman, who had left his van on the road, and was collecting them in his cap. It was the same field that I used to go as a child.
Granny used all sorts of things that we collected, Hazel Nuts, Walnuts (usually green for pickling) , Rowan berries, and Crab Apples (for jelly), Spanish Chestnuts (also known as Sweet chestnuts) as well as the usual Blackberries, young Nettles and lambs lettuce, also Sorrel for soup.
All this was apart from what was grown in their garden, nothing was wasted. If it wasn't cooked straight away, it was turned into Jams, Jellies or Bottled...……..Happy Days!!!
