It’s on loan from Manchester Art Gallery who asked this interesting question on Twitter:

This scene is set at the cotton-spinning mill of Thomas Taylor in Wigan. The smokey chimney to the centre left isn't on the mill plans. Why did artist Eyre Crowe choose to add it? To contrast the glowingly healthy female workers & their oppressive environment? What do you think?

Re: The Dinner Hour, Wigan (1874)
The mill's address was, officially, 'Victoria Mill, Miry Lane, Wigan'.
Another daft, they wouldn't have got an hour for dinner in 1874 either! It was a mill, not a primary school!!
