I remember it being blocked off but never found out why until now.
Gathurst Railway Bridge (Built circa 1780)
Gathurst, Wigan, Lancashire ????????????????????????
This pedestrian tunnel under Gathurst Railway Bridge on Gathurst Road actually started life as a tramway tunnel for coal wagons. The wagons were pulled up the steep incline of Gathurst Brow to collieries in Orrell, Upholland and Billinge by a steam winding engine. The tramway had ceased operations by the early 1890's. During WWII the tunnel was temporarily bricked up and served as a makeshift air raid shelter. Gathurst Railway Bridge is a Grade II Listed structure.
