I wouldn't imagine there'll be many fans of the royal family amongst the rugby supporters.
Could this dropping of the council's insignia be done for a reason?

Re: Wigan Warriors Rebranded
In the most notable change to the Club’s long-standing crest, a Brigante Warrior now features at the heart of the design, in keeping with the identity that the Club has held throughout the Super League era, whilst also retaining several elements that are crucial to recognising Wigan’s proud heritage.
It was decided that the ‘Brigante Warrior’ – who in pre-Roman times controlled the largest section of what would become Northern England and had roots and lineage in the town of Wigan – would be referenced in this design. Elements of the Warrior’s facial expression, distinctive hair, face markings, helmet and shield would form part of the process that brings to life the Warrior moniker that has been part of the Wigan Rugby League’s Super League story.

Club legends Kris Radlinski, captain
and creator Stuart Watson explain why it's happened.

The Ancient & Loyal crest isn't the insignia of the council. It's the old crest of Wigan town. The crest Wigan Council use for Mayoral stuff is the "Progress with Unity" crest formulated in 1974 as a mix of elements from the old Urban District crests.

Oh., yes. The several elements "retained" are really noticeable .... Not!
Dave Oy, The old club badge is the arms granted to the county borough of Wigan. Arms are only granted to persons, not to places. YOU if anybody, should know that!
Here you go!

Yes - I know that.
I suspect this is why the current "Progress with Unity" crest is the crest of the Mayor of Wigan Borough - a person.

Well, if you know that NOW, why didn't you know that earlier, instead of trying to out-wit me?

Actually, and you SHOULD know this too, it's the crest / arms of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, aka Wigan Council. It is not 'Mayoral Arms, as it was granted to the new council, as an organisation, a group of people, not the mayor.
Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council coat of arms - granted 1974.

Re: Wigan Warriors Rebranded
After several run ins with the council , Dave Whelan did the
same with Wigan Athletics badge , and with the stadium having
prospective new Spanish owners , and something mentioned in
the press when bidders were being welcomed was : certain issues
and criteria with the stadium , as the badges of both teams are
emblazoned on the stadium wall , entrance doors , and interior of
the ground , is this an issue

The Wiganer's on Facebook liken it to a Viking covered in maroon, not cherry and white.
