Re: Mind Benders
Welcom myg, a little something to get you started
A factory recycles paper cups for use in its canteen.
Seven used cups are needed to make each new cup.
If there are 2,251 used cups, how many new cups can possibly be made?

Re: Mind Benders
Assuming recycled cups would be recycled in smaller quantities , I make that 375 to the last remaining cup.

Re: Mind Benders
Well done to myg, you’re showing your usual brilliant mind.
I have a slightly different answer.
My logic is that you would divide the original figure of 2,251 cups by 7.
Then you would divide the new figure by 7 and so on till there was no whole number below 7 left.
By that assumption and the assumption that you can’t include ‘part’ cups,
I have a figure of 372 cups, from the following.
321 + 45 + 6 = 372.
If you include ‘part’ cups, then I can get the figure to 374 or there abouts, depending on the number of decimal places used.
I include my answer not to challenge, but to say how I would solve the problem.
I may be wrong of course!!!!!! LOL.
Good to be back posting with you myg.

Re: Mind Benders
First recycle 321 and 4 left
Second recyle from 325 cups makes 46 and 3 left
3rd recycle from 49 cups makes 7
Last recycle makes 1

Re: Mind Benders
Spot on myg, I fully understand your logic.
I tend to over simplify or over complicate things, also I was mithered with fractionl left overs.
It’s the ‘remainder’ of cups after the division by 7 that made your answer correct.
Well done you.

I think I may have amazed myself.
I was counting the number of letters between each successive letters and getting nowhere.
So I wrote the alphabet out horizontally, and it was obvious, each of the letters follows a vowel in sequence.

Re: Mind Benders
The number of minutes lost in 17 hours is 17 x 2.5 = 42.5 = 42 min 30 secs
The number of minutes lost in 15 mins is 2.5 x 60 / 4 = 37.5 secs
Total time lost is 42m + 30s +37.5s = 43m 7.5s
The displayed time 1 hour ago was 17-15.
To 17h 15m add 43m 7.5s = 17h 58m 7.5s
But, the time was 1 hour ago, so add that on.
Actual time is 18-58 and 7.5 secs
I may be wrong of course.

Re: Mind Benders
A man walks north for 3 miles
Then west for 4 miles
Then south for 1 mile
Then east for 2 miles
Then south for 2 miles
In which direction and for how far should he walk to return to his starting point?
