Love the poem
“Will yo’ come o’ Sunday mornin’
For a walk o’er Winter Hill?
Ten thousand went last Sunday
But there’s room for thousand still!
Oh there moors are rare and bonny
And the heather’s sweet and fine
And the roads across the hilltops –
Are the people’s – yours and mine!”

Re: Winter Hill Trespass ~ 125th Commemoration
When I was about 15 or so, my mates and I walked up Winter Hill...in the winter. There was snow around but we were tough little kids. We stood under the new, large ITV tower and were really impressed with the height.
There was a brick building beneath with glass doors. We pounded on them until someone came and opened them. This was on a Sunday also. We asked to look around in our rough Wigan accents. We were politely told to check with the management and make an appointment. We never did, of course but it's a memory that I have treasured all these years.
Great fun, growing up in Wigan, what!!!

There’s a great write up about this Sunday’s event in September’s ‘Country Walking’ magazine.

I believe that all people should have the right to roam our beautiful land...along with the responsibility of treating the land properly.

The 4th March 1977, Winter Hill Transmitter was invaded by the Welsh in protest that English language TV was reaching Wales... they briefly turned off the Transmitter.

Also... this is an excellent history of Winter Hill, The Mast and Rivington Pike. It was a labour of love by the author, and is free to download.
