Here’s a very rare painting probably painted by local artist Thomas Whitehouse who painted many landscapes around Wigan from as early as 1820s this painting from 1832 AD. Look closely this scene is now unrecognisable. It’s looking down Wallgate North Western station on left and the original bridge replaced over 100 years ago.

Wigan North Western really was a magnificent building. Imagine it today with a decent cafe, a pub, a small shopping mall. But look what we got, one of the most depressing stations on the West Coast Mainline.

I knew a lad that lived there before it was demolished.

This map shows the original location of Wigan Wallgate Station.  Note that King Street West does not exist yet and station access was by way of Dorning Street I think.  Date c.1870.
