Re: Standish.
Lolly, perhaps you can help me.
When I was but a wee lad in Pem, I heard that Billy Boston had bought this pub when he retired.
Do you know 'out?

After finishing his playing career, he took over the running of the Griffin Hotel pub near Central Park until his retirement.

Re: Standish.
Cheers, lass...............
Early life of BB. What a history and good luck to him. He was at the Wigan rugby match the other day, on the telly.
Born on 6 August 1934 at Angelina Street, Butetown, Cardiff, Boston was the sixth of eleven children born to John Boston (a merchant seaman from Sierra Leone) and Nellie who came from Cardiff's Irish community.[5]

Re: Standish.
A couple of answers . . .
The lodge building is Prospect Lodge, on Wigan Road, Standish - on your left, as you travel into Standish from Wigan side.
There are still the remains of an early 19th c folly in the garden, originally a pyramid (pictured).
Ref. the earlier enquiry about Billy Boston, he only went into the Griffin in the early '80s, when long standing licensees John and Agnes O'Neill retired from the pub.
Billy did have two pubs prior to the Griffin though - The Bush, up Belle Green Lane, and The Bold hotel, on Poolstock Lane.

Jim Parr, ex Wigan and Rochdale Hornets did have the Boars Head in the late 1980s, but not sure prior to that date.

Re: Standish.
Strange thing. I've had that in my head all these years but never heard anyone else mention it, therefore I presume it must have been fake news....ah, well................
