What would you do if you found some of your photos on another persons web site and he claimed that they were his, he owned the copyright and people needed to get written permission from him before they could use them?

It's good if you credit the owner of the pic.

Yes, I usually do that if I know who the owner is. It's common courtesy, but someone has taken some of my canal photos for his own web site and is claiming that he took the photos and is saying that he has the copyright and people need his permission to use them. Now, I don't mind anyone using my pics but when they claim ownership of them then I get my backup.

Incidentely, I have proved that they are my pics by using the technical data embedded in each photo which shows that they were taken with my camera, serial number of camera also shown. I am not going to chase him up as he is obviously an arrogant chap as he sent me a rather rude e-mail when I pointed out that some of the pics were mine.
