Re: Millgate???
I remember a lady on Lamberhead Road, just around the corner from us who sold pop from her home. Not sure if it was Palatine or 'the other one'. Can't remember the name.

Re: Millgate???
Lolly , your entry on June 4th ( don't rush me )!!! Charlie O'Leary was one of my sergeants at Pem . We lived for a while in a derelict house on Wigan Lane , backing onto "The Folly" , I remember the pop factory and the wagons going out of the archway onto Wigan Lane . Sitting on the kerb and on hot days rolling the tar from between the cobbles making little balls of it . Did it ever rain when we were kids ????

Re: Millgate???
No , the house we had was on the left when you went up Wigan Lane , at the top of the hill just before the left hand bend , and just past the girls high school on the right .the house backed onto The Folly . The pop factory was through the arch before our house again on the left , and onto the bottom corner of the folly . Howdid all our parents cope ????

Re: Millgate???
nordic,
Our parents were resilient, to say the least. We do not have people like them today, sadly....

Re: Millgate???
I wish I had the bottle,
to manage as mum and dad did.
They managed on next to nothing,
bringing up a house full of kids.
They had their morals and standards,
manners were top of the list.
Being clean and tidy was important,
( mum checking the places you missed ).
No washing machines or spin dryers,
it was dolly tub ,posser and steam.
Everything hung out on the line to dry,
a snapped line would spoil the whole scene.
Monday was usually our wash day,
and out would come our old mangle.
Mum would push sheets through the rollers,
and I'd try to help with the handle.
Our family was the same as most others,
they did the best that they could.
With meager means at their disposal,
we grew up mainly honest and good.
shopping was a daily occurrence,
on the way mum would meet with a friend.
They'd compare the CO-OP prices,
and make sure of the old dividend.
Now it's LIVE YOUR LIFE AS YOU WANT TO,
no pride just twisted ideals.
Just put everything on the credit,
( disposable people are real).
No I don't think that I've got the bottle,
I would fail and I think it's quite sad.
Later generations have important things missing,
The ideals that mum and dad had.
