Coronation Day 6th May 2023
The day of splendour and formality will feature customs dating back more than 1,000 years. Here is how we expect it to unfold.

Re: Coronation Day 6th May 2023
t’s just gone 10:20 BST, and King Charles III is setting off from Buckingham Place through the Centre Gate.
The outbound journey to Westminster Abbey is known as the King’s Procession.
The return journey - featuring a much larger group - will be the Coronation Procession.
A carriage carrying the King and Queen Consort Camilla slots into a small waiting procession.
They’re given a Royal Salute from the King’s Guard as they set off.

Re: Coronation Day 6th May 2023
There has been a deliberate attempt to make this a more multifaith and diverse ceremony, alongside what is essentially a Christian church service.
There are representatives of the Muslim, Jewish, Sikh and Buddhist communities – and the prime minister reading out a Bible reading is Rishi Sunak, a Hindu.
Black and Asian people will have prominent roles within the ceremony, including as public figures and as part of the clergy. Women bishops will be participating for the first time in a thousand years of Coronations.
There are words in Welsh and Scottish and Irish Gaelic and a Byzantine chant in Greek, as a nod to the King’s late father, Prince Philip.

It's a shame there's no recogition and representation for us whom 'faith' is just that. A belief in something with no evidence.
At least one secular representative - maybe a Humanist leader - would have been nice.
Nice bit of pomp so far though - enjoying it

Screen conceals King from view
We're now in the most sacred part of the service.
The King's ceremonial robe removed, and he sits in the Coronation Chair to be anointed. It’s a way of emphasising the spiritual status of the sovereign, who is also the head of the Church of England.
A screen is arranged around the chair to conceal the King from view.

Re: Coronation Day 6th May 2023
I've no doubt anyone would be stressed having to get everything right in front of the millions watching. There would be a lot of folk picking holes, had he so much as coughed.

Re: Coronation Day 6th May 2023
The newly-crowned king and queen are leaving Westminster Abbey and will shortly take part in a second parade - much larger than the first - and with other royals involved.
The Coronation Procession is heading back to Buckingham Palace via the same 1.4-mile (2.3km) route that was used this morning.
The command is now given for this huge procession to step off.
Nearly 4,000 UK armed forces personnel are in formation - marching in step with each other.
This is a major military ceremonial operation that’s been described as the largest of its kind for a generation.
There have been six weeks of rehearsals to make sure all the marching bands are synchronised.
