Always were mucky divvils.
It's a matter of record that during WWI, Northern soldiers in the trenches would seize on any opportunity at all, to wash, and clean themselves up, where the London regiments wouldn't, and had far lower standards of hygiene.
It was suggested this was because many of the Northern soldiers had been employed in heavy industry and mining - ie mucky jobs, and were used to washing after their work.
