Greater Manchester: Some 17,000 homes lack central heating - census
Councillors in Greater Manchester have said they are "appalled" people in more than 17,000 homes in the region are living without central heating as temperatures plummet below freezing.
The latest UK census shows the region has one of the highest numbers of homes with no heating in the country.
'Sad indictment'
Mr Cooney, who is also Greater Manchester Combined Authority's lead on housing, said many would "expect living standards to be going up and everyone to have decent housing".
He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service there was also a "prosperity issue" as some who did have central heating were "too frightened to turn it on because the bills are so expensive".

Re: No Central Heating
A good scheme but it's getting there. If you are elderly and its icy under foot is it worth the effort? You'll be warm, but then freezing again on the way home

Re: No Central Heating
No freezing here at RMJ Towers, us owd b*ggers need to keep warm and blow the expense.
Currently, gas fires on all day in the lounge and dining room.
Central heating from the gas boiler and radiators on all day from 6am to 11pm.
It’s economically better to keep it running continually than do short bursts, but that is secondary, main thing is comfort.
Look after yourselves folks, keep warm, keep well.

“And suppose you have got no money to pay for your heating bill ?”
I feel genuinely sorry for folk who are struggling to pay their heating bills TTS I really do, but having worked for 50 years and paid into final salary pension schemes plus state pensions, me and Mrs RMJ can afford to keep warm thankfully.

Re: No Central Heating
When I first got married we struggled to pay our mortgage and bills for a good few years.
We both worked but when interest rates topped 15% it was a real struggle. I have on a few occasions said that I wont be cold, been there seen it done it. I feel sorry for those that cant afford to pay their heating bills, many get help, we never did back then.
