GWR Castle Class No5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' leaving Carnforth this morning with 'The Shap Mountaineer' to Carlisle. 16th March 2024. A rare sight to see a Castle Class this far North!

Originally Castles were not fitted with sanding gear, when they were for some reason the strong winds over Shap blew the sand away. I don't know if the same sanding arrangement is still in use
