“To be on the wagon” - abstaining from drinking any alcoholic drink, usually in the sense of having given it up as opposed to never having partaken, teetotal.

Re: Phrases and their meaning
I heard a story, years ago, that jailers would transport a convicted man to the gallows on a wagon. They would stop for a pint on the way and someone would ask if the prisoner would like a drink. The jailers would reply, 'NO, he's on the wagon'..not sure if this true... but sounds good..........
Re: Phrases and their meaning
Cheers, that’s an explanation I have heard before Admin, then there is the opposite of that, where the prisoner WAS allowed his last drink because he was “on the wagon”.
Another one is “on the water wagon” or “on the water cart”, referring to carts used to hose down dusty roads.
The suggestion is that a person who is “on the wagon” is drinking water rather than alcoholic beverages.

Re: Phrases and their meaning
Never heard that one, Ray...very interesting stuff............. makes sense.........
Re: Phrases and their meaning
Cheers Admin, it is a Japanese saying, hence its unfamiliarity, but in actual fact is doesn’t sound like something the Japanese would say because they are a precise, no nonsense, infallible race.

“Pretend to be an Englishman” - a Serbian saying.
Pretend that you are innocent and have no idea what is going on.
The Serbs, it seems, have trust issues with the English.

Edinburgh in days gone by was called 'Auld Reekie' which I suppose is 'Old Smokie'.
