Is it one of them there wotsits on the Parish Church roof area

It is indeed one of those wotsits on the roof of Wigan Parish Church, Naughty Mitten!

I think its proper name is a grotesque as gargoyles have a water spout.

There are many fascinating characters to look out for all over the building.

I hunted a pic of the parish church and dismissed the idea

The photo features the ‘embattled parapet with a crocketed pinnacle’, I think.

The details are amazing when you start to study them, Lolly. Binoculars would be useful though. The grotesque I took a photo of was on a lower section, but I couldn’t tell you where exactly.

The character holding on to the chap’s ears higher up on the right also caught my eye.

If I remember rightly,at the back of the Church are some steps leading down to a secret room where the vicars used to hide..I've forgotten the full details,it was some years ago that I read the book all about the Parish Church and I went to have a look at the steps.

I didn’t know of those steps, Maureen, the church has a very interesting history.

The 1930’s shop front … “is a rare example in Wigan of Art Deco design. Note the glass frieze, the street number & surround, the squared fascia letters, & the polished granite front”

The huge headgear sheave / pulley from Bickershaw Colliery No.4 Pit, Leigh. Mounted outside Parsons Walk College, Wigan town centre, formerly the Mining & Technical College. The shaft was 787 yards deep, used for coal winding
