Surely they must have checked into the legality of this plan before announcing it? Besides why send them to Rwanda...just ship them back across the channel...!!!

What am I missing? Crying or Very sad

The Rwanda plan Empty Re: The Rwanda plan

Post by Lolly Mon Mar 20, 2023 9:35 pm

The problem with illegal immigrants crossing the channel is an on going problem. There
has been out cry about using hotels to accommodate these people. There has been a suggestion about using defunct RAF bases[RAF Scamton home to the famous Dambusters} to house them but that has been objected to. Someone suggested that they be housed on islands around our coast, can anyone suggest how this might work?

Is the government right to suggest that illegal immigrants will be sent to Rwanda. Is the money being spent to achieve this justified?

What about putting them in jails? Why 4 star hotels? We don't put our homeless in them...!!! We don't put prisoners in them..!!!

What IS this government thinking of.? Why are we paying the French millions of pounds to stop them coming across? It's not working.

I believe the French are taking the p-ss out of us. I am angry...Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.......... Slightly angry

" What IS this government thinking of?. "I'ts not working" That's probably why the Rwanda

plan was brought in. What's your take on that Fred.  Should they be sent there or not?

Apparently it isn't illegal to pass through safe countries to get here to claim asylum. They must think it's worth putting their lives at risk, and their childrens lives, to cross the channel. I have no idea whether the new policy will, firstly get off the ground, and if it does
will it deter people from making that dangerous crossing.

Just been reading this, It seems my friend is caught up in the Malawi cyclone freddie

Mzuzu Chief Resident Magistrate Court has sentenced 23 Ethiopians and a Burundian National to two months’ imprisonment for entering the country illegally.

State Prosecutor Sub Inspector Fancy Sichali pleaded with the court to hand the convicts a stiffer punishment saying the malpractice is rampant and that when deported the culprits return to Malawi.

In mitigation, the illegal immigrants through an interpreter asked the court not to deport them saying conditions in their home countries are bad hence their migration for other countries.

However, Chief Resident Magistrate Paul Chiotcha sentenced the 24 to two months’ imprisonment after which they should be deported to their countries.

Ministers have signalled they want to end the use of hotels as asylum seeker accommodation and instead use military bases or disused ferries.

"have signalled they want" - that's a long way off then! And probably as realistic as a Tory Manifesto promise.

What did the Court of Appeal ruling say?
Campaigners and asylum seekers have won a Court of Appeal challenge against the UK government's planned Rwanda deportation scheme
The Court of Appeal overturns a High Court ruling that said in December the east African nation could be considered a "safe third country"
The decision was announced by the Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett during a short hearing in London
The decision of the majority of judges was that, due to "deficiencies" in the Rwandan asylum system there are substantial grounds for believing that there is a real risk that persons sent to Rwanda will be returned to their home countries, where they were fleeing from
Until those deficiencies are corrected, removal of asylum seekers will be unlawful, the court ruled
The appellants, charity Asylum Aid and ten asylum seekers, argued there were substantial grounds for believing there is a real risk that any persons sent to Rwanda will be removed to their home country

@RishiSunak
It is this country – and your government – who should decide who comes here, not criminal gangs.

It has now got to be passed through the Lords and then through the Courts, so it's by no means a done deal.
I don't want to knock it, because any measure the Government take to try and stop the boats is worth trying, but they have paid Rwanda £240 million up to now and not one single person has been sent there, so how will that be a deterrent. these immigrants will know that fact and take their chances knowing that being sent there is unlikely.

I can't understand these figures.

Those in favour: 320
Those against: 276

It's almost like half the party disagrees with the other half and at election time the country itself is split almost down the middle as well..

Still, I suppose that's democracy for you.

I also don't understand why send them to Rwanda..why not send right back to France. Other parties are talking about doing this.

Oooooooops. me soapbox just collapsed....bah.......
